Ever want to brighten up a photograph that was shot in back-lit light?

Here's an easy trick you can do in Photoshop to make it really POP!

First, choose a photograph where your main subject is darker, because the light source or sun is behind them.
Here you can see the before and after images from this technique:

We chose the image Couple walking down beach

Step 1:

First, create a Duplicate of your original image (Top Menu > Image > Duplicate)

Step 2:

Convert your Duplicate Copy to GRAYSCALE Mode (Top Menu > Image > Mode > Grayscale)

Step 3:

BLUR your Duplicate Copy with a Gaussian Blur.  The one below was done with a Pixel Radius of 6 (yours may need more or less, depending on the image size)

Step 4:

Click on your original File and LOAD the Duplicate Copy (Top Menu > Select > Load Selection), with INVERT checked, and CHANNEL: Gray

You will now see your Selection of "marching ants" on the original image:

Step 5:

Now, FILL, using 50% Gray, Mode Color Dodge, at 100% Opacity  (Top Menu > Edit > Fill ) and De-Select your "marching ants" (Command-D):

That's it!  If anything is too bright, you can always use your History Brush to paint detail back in!
