If you are anticipating a great shot with fog, mother nature isn't always as cooperative as we would like.Luckily, adding fog to a shot can be done in a few easy steps.

For this tutorial, we will be using Church in fields

Step 1.

Since this photo looks a bit bright for a foggy day, we will lower the saturation level to something more suitable.
For this example we set the saturation to -30.

Step 2.

On a new layer, using the gradient tool, we will make a gradient fill.

Choose "Foreground to Transparent" so you can see your original image behind the gradient.

Make sure your foreground color is set to a fog color suitable for your image.

Step 3.

Create another new layer.  Select your paintbrush tool and set the mode to "dissolve".

Adjust your opacity and flow around 20%-30%.  Paint in areas of patchy fog as desired.
Change-up your brush size as needed to create areas with varied size and thickness.

Step 4.

The newly added fog looks a bit speckled.  Now use Gaussian Blur to soften the new layer of fog.
We used a setting of 45 for this example.

Step 5.

Merge the fog layer and gradient layer together.
You will now need to add a bit of noise and gaussian blur to match the grain of the original image.
Flatten image and you are done!
