Painter, photographer, filmmaker, and publisher Andy Warhol made this style synonymous with Pop Art in the mid-20th century. Using image subjects from the glamorous to the mundane, Warhol produced iconic silkscreen paintings of subjects that sparked countless imitiations. Now you can easily create your own Pop Art-inspired image in Photoshop, just follow these easy steps!

Here you can see the before and after images from this technique.

We recommend you using an image with a simple background - or, with a background that is easily extractable. We chose the image Mixed breed brown dog smiling

Lets begin! Step 1.

The first step is to create a copy of the background.  You can do this with Command+J or drag the background layer to the “create new layer” icon.
This is going to be your “cutout” layer.

Then create a new layer (Layer-New Layer) on Normal Mode and 100% Opacity.

Fill it with a color that will become your background (Edit-Fill).

Step 2.

On your cutout layer, using the magic wand or lasso tool, select the background around the subject.

Once background is selected, cut it out (Command+X).  Now your color layer should show behind the subject.

Step 3.

Next, with your cutout layer selected, go to Image-Adjustment-Threshold.

Play with the slider until you get the desired effect.

Step 4.

Now select a part of the image you want to color and create a layer (Command+J).  Set the blending mode to multiply.  Do this for each area you want to color.

Step 5.

Hold the Command key and click on the thumbnail of the layer you want to color. This will select the transparent pixels for that layer.

Then fill with the desired color for each.

Final Step.

And then you can take it further by creating multiple versions and putting them together Andy Warhol style!
