Give your photo a realistic Rain Effect!

We agree that this effect will not look realistic on ALL your photos. However, when it works - it works well! The following steps will show you how to create a rain for a unique photo effect!

Step 1:

Choose and Open your image.

Stock photo of Woman in Forest

This image works well for this tutorial for a couple of reasons...

1. Background is a simple landscape.

2. Her clothing works and you wouldn't be able to tell if its wet or dry.

3. The motion of her hair gives a natural "having fun in the rain" effect.

Step 2:

Make a new layer my clicking on the "new layer" option on your layers panel.

Step 3:

Make sure your foreground and background colors are on black and white, then using your new layer select

Filter > Render > Clouds.

Your layer will now look like this.

Step 4:

Now add noise to the cloud layer with the following settings.

Amount = 150

Distribution = Gaussian

* make sure that Monochromatic is checked.

Step 5:

Next motion blur the newly added noise according to the strength and direction of rain you would like to add to the image by selecting

Filter > Blur > Motion Blur.

Step 6:

Now is when the fun begins!  Chose the "screen" blend mode option on the layers panel.

Our picture now looks like this.

Step 7:

Now using levels, adjust the rain layer until you've reached an optimal effect!

Good Luck,
